Memorial Day Multisport Adventure

Headed out for an early Memorial Day weekend Friday morning with Scott. We kept busy and came back with lots of sun and good memories.

Dropped Sam off with Jennie in Sandy and then went down to Bend. We camped two nights near the Deschutes River. Saturday we went for an eighty-five mile road ride past Mt. Bachelor and around the beautiful Cascade Lakes region. We encountered eight miles of gravel on the loop which we were able to ride albeit slower and with some trepidation. Then we had a nice climb up to Mt. Bachelor from Bend to finish off the ride. We rolled back into town for beers and Mexican food.

Sunday we drove up to the Badger Creek Wilderness area north of Maupin. We went out for a twenty-five mile hike that was outstanding. Views of eastern Oregon and the desert, Mt. Hood, Badger Creek canyon. Many logs downed from wind storms over the trail. We went off-trail a few times and used the GPS to help guide us to our next trail junction. We picked up the pace near the end as the light was fading and were walking back to the car in the twilight around nine o'clock. Besides the downed trees we were slowed by the many morels along the way we stopped to gather.

Monday morning we ate breakfast in Maupin and then wet our fly lines in the Deschutes. I hadn't been out fly-fishing in quite a while and it felt great. The salmonfly and golden stonefly hatches have begun but we didn't see any going on while we fished, probably a bit early in the day. I did land a twelve-incher on a nymph and hooked a couple of other small ones on dry. I may try and get out more than I have been to fly-fish. Back in Portland and ready for a couple of quiet days.
