A Portland weekend (or how I have been too busy to take any photos)

A wet and dreary weekend did not prove to be a slow one around Portland. Friday night Meredith and I went to the Unicycle Bastards holiday party. It was about two miles away so we decided to unicycle over to get in the mood. We took some quiet neighborhood streets and slowly made our way over to my old neighborhood in Hollywood. We ate at the Laurelwood before heading over to the unicycle house, dubbed The Armory. We were expecting some sort of chaotic, rowdy party based on our brief interactions with this group in the past. On the contrary it was a regular sort of holiday cocktail party, albeit with unicycle "porn", aka videos of people unicycling, playing in the background. All in all, a fun time. We headed back in time to catch the tail end of a cyclocross photography exhibit that opened at the home of Vanilla Bicycles around the corner from my place. There was a fun bikey crowd there and I got to hear about the photographer's next project, to go film the Tour D'Afrique, a dream of mine to set out on one day.

Saturday I went out for the first day of my snowboarding season at SkiBowl, conditions were OK, not as powdery as I was hoping for but it was fun to get the gear back on and take some turns. I have a pass again and am looking forward to lots of trips up and Optimators at the warming hut.

Saturday night my friends Becky and Katja threw a uniquely Wigs n' Velvet themed birthday party at a bar on Division they had booked for the night. You kind of had to be there. There was a great DJ and lots of fun people. I got lots of comments that I looked like Rod Stewart in my wig and sunglasses.

And yesterday after a post-party breakfast with Scott and Meredith at Utopia I headed down to the coast with my friend Annie and Sam to check out the hurricane force winds they were predicting. There was a constant rain on the drive and snow over the coastal mountains pass. We hiked at Cape Lookout, the wind in the trees was really howling and making all sorts of interesting noises. The ocean was a tumult as well, what we could see of it anyway as it was pretty socked in. I've been out there before when you can see for miles. Sam had a grand time, sniffing the air and diving after birds in the undergrowth. Despite full rain gear we got a little wet and cold and warmed up at the Pelican Pub in Pacific City with a meal and a beer watching the surf break and the sand blow.
