Backyard chickens

I experienced the adventure of free-range chicken farming today. It was quite warm so I thought it'd be a good day to bring the chickens outside for the first time, let them run about, maybe start to identify them as individuals, not just as one of the three breeds I've got: Black Japanese (2), Silver Duckwing Old English (4), Golden Sebright (5). I'd like to know sooner rather than later which are roosters also. I even thought I might get Sam out on a leash for a little closer introduction if things were going smoothly.

Well, it was all a bit chaotic instead. At first there were just a couple groups standing around but then they decided to stretch their wings a little bit and a couple flew up on the deck and some were making for distant parts of the yard. I quickly realized that while my backyard was fenced great for Sam there were lots of little holes for the size of these guys. So I started collecting them back in to their bin. Most were back in quickly but there were two that weren't ready to come back in yet. They both made for behind my garage, a very narrow ivy-covered strip of land between the garage and a chain-link fence.

I recaptured the rogue Golden Sebright pretty quickly and returned him to the coop, but the Black Japanese wasn't coming back. I could see her but she'd shy away when I tried to reach back there. Then I couldn't see her for a while and got a little worried. I got back there with a flashlight and found she'd squeezed through the chain-link fence and was bedded down in the ivy. With the help of my neighbor I flushed her back on the right side of the fence and we recovered her and returned her to the flock. I was worried I was down one for a while there. I say "her" and I hope that's correct and I'll get to keep this one. I'd name her Sarah for the neighbor that helped me retrieve her but that'd be confusing, so I'm thinking Betty instead, we'll see.
